Why individual policies become expensive in a fleet
Motor insurance is normally rated by the type of use, the type of vehicle, the place of registration, the annual mileage and the age of the drivers. In a fleet that has grown over the years this leads to a patchwork: every vehicle has its own no claims class, every new addition starts on unfavourable terms, and every claim affects that one policy for years.
On top of that comes the administration. Different renewal dates, separate premium invoices, claims reported in all directions. A fleet policy brings that together: one contract, one contact, one account, one renewal date.
Rating without a no claims discount
Companies with vehicle fleets have further rating options open to them that work without a no claims discount. Among the possibilities are unit premiums by vehicle type, meaning separate rates for cars, vans and trucks above four tonnes payload, or a company premium based on the annual claims burden of the fleet as a whole.
Added to that are better starting terms for vehicles joining the fleet, profit sharing where the claims record is good, and arrangements for vehicles temporarily taken off the road. That makes the premium something you can steer: bring the claims ratio down and you see it directly in the following year's account.
What else we look at in a fleet
A fleet involves more than third party and own damage cover. We settle whether excesses and approved repairer clauses suit your vehicles, how trailers, semi trailers and self propelled machinery are classified, and whether special bodywork is included in the sum insured.
Two points are regularly forgotten: the load, which needs own goods in transit cover, and business trip own damage insurance for staff who use their private car for work. Without it you as the employer quickly end up paying for the loss of the no claims discount on their private policy. How claims are handled also belongs in the arrangement, because every notification affects the next premium round.
We will work through your fleet.
A vehicle list and the claims record of the past few years are enough for us to give you a solid assessment.
