School trips

As soon as a sports school bundles several services into one package, it counts as a tour operator. From that moment the duties of package travel law apply.

When your school becomes a tour operator

Tour operators and agents are subject to the liability provisions of travel contract law and need cover of their own for it. That also applies to sports schools that combine several services into one package deal, for example tuition, meals, accommodation and transfer. From that moment you are liable not only for your own tuition but for the trip as a whole.

What the school liability policy already covers

Our school liability cover includes personal injury and property damage where trips are offered as part of the school by coach or for people driving themselves. That covers the typical course trips, camps and excursions, including the coach travel risk.

Where additional cover becomes necessary

As soon as flights are involved, or where pure financial loss is to be covered as well, school liability cover is no longer enough. You then need the specialist cover for tour operators. Which parts that involves in detail is set out on our page on tour operators.

  • Insolvency certificates for package tours under sections 651r and 651w of the German Civil Code
  • Specialist liability for personal injury and property damage including the air carriage risk
  • Financial loss liability for tour operators

The insolvency certificate is compulsory

Anyone who collects all or part of the price before the trip has to protect the customers' money against their own insolvency and hand over an insolvency certificate. That applies to small schools with only a few dates a year as well. We will tell you which form of protection makes sense for your size and how to document the evidence properly.
